Fall Events and Programs
Kindergarten/New Family Meet and Greet (August) New and Kindergarten families gather to mingle and meet the PTO on the Whittier playground before school starts. Bring a snack or drink to share.
Whittier Is Enriched! (WISE) (August registration for Fall) is a popular after-school enrichment program; with offerings like YogaKids, Dynamic Chess, Multisport Madness, and Actor’s Garden, we have something for everyone! Fall registration materials are distributed soon after the first day of school; classes begin about two weeks later and run through winter break. Volunteers will be needed to help with weekly attendance and dismissal.
Whittier Common Ground Coffee (Monthly) offers parents/guardians free coffee and conversation on the playground after drop off on the first Friday of the month.
Whittier PTO Meetings (Monthly) are held 7 PM - 8:30 PM on the first Tuesday of the month. Everyone is encouraged to attend. Free childcare is provided.
Back to School Picnic (September) welcomes new and returning families in the early fall. The PTO provides the main course and entertainment. Volunteers will be needed for set up, serving, and clean up.
Whittier 101 Series (September) information lectures that discussion issues related to student learning and behavioral supports for all Whittier students. Free childcare and refreshments provided.
Wildcat Fun Run (October) is our biggest fundraiser of the year—during the school day, we have a walk/run-a-thon, kid style! We need volunteers to help with setting up, breaking down, distributing snacks, and making sure the event runs smoothly.
Fall Book Fair (October) happens during the week of Family-Teacher Conferences. We’ll need many, many volunteers to set up, work registers, and clean up.
Fall Teacher Dinner (October) is a dinner held for teachers during the week of Family Teacher Conferences. The PTO provides the main dish, and families donate side dishes, drinks, and dessert.
World Language Program (October registration) provides weekly language classes for grades 2-5 during the lunch hour. Last year’s classes included French, German, and American Sign Language. Classes run from November through April.
Pumpkin Festival (October) is an annual school sponsored event that the PTO contributes to financially. This It is a pumpkin decorating/carving contest that encourages the student’s creativity and imagination.
Halloween Parade (Halloween) is a fun event just after the lunch hour on Halloween, where the children march around the block wearing their costumes.
Fall Harvest Dance (November) is a family dance social, organized by the 5th Grade Girl Scouts, and funded in part by the PTO.
Turkey Trot (November) is an annual school sponsored mile run around Taylor Park during the week before Thanksgiving. The PTO contributes funds to the turkey prize.

Winter/Spring Events and Programs
Trivia Night (January) is a really fun adults-only fundraising event with food, drink, and an entertaining battle of wits. We'll be looking for volunteers to help with selling tickets and spotting (score-keeping). Whether you're volunteering or playing trivia, it's sure to be a night to remember!

Fun Fair (March) is an annual spring event with carnival games, prizes, food, and a popular cake walk. This event requires more volunteers than any other event we run. Volunteers serve food, sell tickets, and run games, and distribute prizes.
Silent Auction (March) happens at the Spring Fun Fair; participants bid on/sign up for parties and experiences donated by Whittier families.

Service Day (April) gathers families to help clean up the Greenleaf Garden and the school grounds in the spring. Come volunteer with other families to pick weeds, spread mulch, and spruce up the school grounds!
Whittier Yearbook (April/May) is produced, sold, and distributed by Whittier PTO volunteers each year. Orders are taken in April and yearbooks are distributed in May.
Whittier School Supply Kits (May) simplify school supply shopping. Pre-order school supplies and your child's school supplies will be waiting in her classroom on the first day of school. Orders taken from May until the last day of school.
Teacher Appreciation Luncheon (May) is a luncheon held for teachers and staff in the spring. Families sign up to provide food and drink; we also need parent and guardian volunteers to set up, serve food, clean up, and supervise the playground while the teachers and staff enjoy their meal.
End of Year Picnic (May) closes another great year of learning, sharing, and fun! The PTO provides the main dish and entertainment. Volunteers are needed to set up, clean up, and serve food.
Olympic Day (May) is an end of school year day of games including a pizza lunch.
Fundraisers Ongoing/Occurring Throughout the Year
Amazon Smile allows you to raise funds for Whittier PTO when you shop Amazon. Choose Whittier School PTO in Oak Park as your charity on Amazon Smile; bookmark the link and remember to click on the bookmark before each Amazon purchase.
Art To Remember Purchase coffee mugs, magnets, and other items made with reproductions of your child’s artwork.
Birthday Books Donate a book to Whittier’s library in your child’s name as a birthday gift.
Box Tops an easy fundraiser that everyone can help with by collecting box tops from products you already purchase.
Restaurant Nights Mention Whittier PTO when you dine in or order take out from a local restaurant on the designated night and that restaurant donates a percentage of those sales to Whittier PTO.
Whittier Wear T-shirts and hoodies can be ordered online during one of the several sales that happen throughout the year.
Whittier at the Movies is a movie screening with snacks and drinks after school on Fridays throughout the school year.
Diversity Committee seeks to educate themselves and others regarding issues surrounding educational access, various biases that include gender, race, and disability. Planned events include meetings, an Article Club, and an Open House.
Green Team teaches Whittier students to be good stewards of their school community and of the earth’s resources through the Greenleaf Garden, Zero-waste lunch initiatives and more.
Wellness Committee promotes health and wellness awareness through a variety of programs at Whittier.
Digital Backpack Email is a weekly email with updates on Whittier Elementary School, PTO events, and other information relevant to the Whittier Community, including flyers.
Greenleaf Newsletter is a monthly newsletter featuring PTO information, student work, updates from specials classes, and more.
Tuesday Newsday is a weekly emailed newsletter filled with reminders and links to the latest school, PTO, and community events. It contains links to the flyers in weekly Digital Backpack, which are also distributed in hard-copy to families who request paper versions of the Digital Backpack.
PTO Liaisons are members of each class who can answer PTO-related questions and occasionally provide email updates on PTO events to their classrooms.
